VFFC’s Health Care Share (HCS), in its third year, is increasing access and consumption of healthy foods for at-risk health families in Rutland County. The HCS is an innovative collaboration working at the intersection of agriculture, public health, and economic development. The HCS partners with economically challenged new and emerging local farms, primary health care providers, and educators. VFFC HCS offers an actionable preventative health initiative while involving local underserved youth through summer employment opportunities engaging community volunteers, farmers, and HCS Members as part of the regional food network.
VFFC's Health Care Share Members benefit from 10-12lbs of local, nutrient diverse, fresh produce, for 15 weeks during the growing season and monthly for the rest of the year. Health Care Shares are supplemented with nutrition and cooking education, community dinners, workshops, and cultural events.
